1. When should I call a moving company?

It's wise to give your moving company from four to six week's notice, if possible. The more lead time you can give, the more likely we will be able to meet your preferred delivery schedule.  We give our best effort to comply with the dates you prefer or the nearest possible alternatives.  If you need specific dates due to such factors as lease expiration or a real estate closing, you should discuss your specific pickup and delivery requirements with your move consultant, who can advise you regarding the types and costs of services available.

2. What happens on my interstate move if the truck cannot access my house or apartment?

A shuttle service is required whenever your residence is not accessible for your large truck usually a tractor trailer.  During your survey, the estimator will identify whether or not a shuttle will be required.  Shuttle service is an additional charge and is determined by the weight and distance of the shuttle.

3. Why don't you provide a online estimates?

When you entrust your belongings to someone it is a good idea that you get to know the person and company you are entrusting your belongings.  You receive the best value when you take advantage of your move consultant’s knowledge on planning your move and answering your questions face to face.  During your in-home move consultation, we will discuss and provide you information about your rights as a consumer, liability protection, auto shipping, and how to prepare for each stage of your move.

4. When should I disconnect my utilities?

It is recommended that you disconnect your utilities at least 1 day AFTER your move.

5. What are the advantages and disadvantages to doing my own packing?

Doing your own packing will reduce your moving cost but is the most tedious step of the moving process.  Packing is also one of the most important factors in protecting your goods.  If you do choose to pack your belongings, it is critical to have the mover pack your breakables or your move consultant provide you with instruction and materials on packing your breakables.  KC Salley provides partial, breakables, or full packing service. Note: We do not accept liability for packing damage when you choose to pack your own goods.

6. I've heard all about moving-related horror stories. Why will I be comfortable with KC Salley?

We are a licensed mover within Texas and the United States.  KC Salley is a member of The Better Business Bureau, Employee Relocation Council, Houston Relocation Professionals, Greater Houston Movers Association, Southwest Movers Association, and American Moving and Storage Association.  For your protection, the government enacted new legislation to place restrictions on how much a mover can collect from you at the time of delivery. It is your move consultant’s job to provide you with literature on your rights and responsibilities as a consumer of moving services.

7. Can KC Salley move my car?

Yes. KC Salley can arrange your car to be shipped with United Van Lines.  United Van Lines provides several options to move your car including enclosed van service and car carrier.

8. Where should I pack the essential items that I will need immediately upon delivery?

KC Salley will provide you a parts box to put the components, remotes and hardware of items disassembled by your moving crew.  This box should be the 1st item listed on your inventory.  Items of personal nature such as sheets, bath items, and disposable utensils should be labeled “load last.”  This will ensure that these items will be delivered first.

9. Is KC Salley part of United Van Lines?  What is an agent?

11. I hear that setting up my move over the internet is a bad thing. Is that true?

12. What methods of payment do you accept?

We accept certified checks, money orders, cash, and most major credit cards.

13. On moving day, what time will my crew be arriving?

Your Move Coordinator will contact you 24 hours before your move to provide you with an arrival time for the crew. You will receive a call 48 hours in advance to notify you of delivery.

14. Can you move my live plants?

On interstate or international moves we are not allowed to transport plants.  On local and Texas moves we do ship plants but do not accept liability for the plants condition or pottery.  We recommend to all of our customers to give the plants away or move them in your vehicle.

15. When is the best or cheapest time to move?  

Between May 15th and September 1st is "peak period" where equipment and personnel are in high demand. If your moving plans are flexible, avoid moving during this time frame.  The end and the beginning of each month is a busy time as well. Schedule your move for the middle of the month and movers will be in less demand.

16. How long will it take for my belongings to arrive at my new location?  

The delivery time will depend on where you're moving and the size of your move.  By law, a driver is restricted to travel 500 miles per day.  Additionally, your driver could be scheduled to load or unload other shipments in route. 

17. What type of coverage options do I have on my move?  

We do offer a selection of coverage, including:

Basic Carrier Liability. Basic liability is just that - basic. Protection is $.60 per pound at no additional cost to you. If your LCD TV (weighing 20lbs) is damaged, under basic liability protection, you would be paid either $12.  The majority of our customers do not choose elect instead to purchase full replacement coverage.

Replacement Cost Protection. Replacement cost protection offers the highest level of protection. Under this plan if an item is lost or damaged beyond repair, it is replaced regardless of cost, without depreciation. Under this option you must declare a lump sum valuation or your entire shipment with a minimum of $6.00 per pound.  You will have 5 deductible options to consider Zero, $250, $500, $750, and $1000 deductibles.

18. What items can't be moved?  

Your move consultant will provide you literature on items which we are not allowed to move.  We will provide you a copy or please see a listing of items not allowed to be shipped.

19. What will happen if my belongings need to be stored?  

If you are unable to move into your home at the time your belongings are scheduled to be delivered, KC Salley can safely store the goods in one of our facilities or with another United Van Lines Agent.   KC Salley has a 100% Air Condition Warehouse.

20. Will anyone else's belongings be on the van with mine?

Unless your belongings will fill up the entire moving van, then there will be other goods loaded onto the van with yours.

21. Do the items in my dresser drawers need to be packed?

Fragile, breakable or valuable items should be removed from your drawers. Fragile and breakable items should be packed and valuables should be transported by you. When you are sure that your belongings will not go into storage, then you can leave non-breakable, non-valuables in your dresser drawers. If your belongings are bound for storage, then all contents of drawers must be emptied.

22. How will you protect my upholstered furniture?

For cloth upholstered items we utilize Clear Plastic Stretch wrap to prevent soiling and other damage.  For leather items, we cannot utilize stretch wrap because it will damage your leather goods.  We utilize a paper pad that will not stick to your leather upholstered items.

23. Do I need to be present when the movers are there?  

We request that you or someone who can act on your behalf be present the entire time the packers and movers are in your home. You will need to sign paperwork and verify services performed.  In addition, you will want to ensure that all services are being performed to your satisfaction, and that all items to be moved are given to the driver.

24. What should be done about jewelry and other valuables?  

Movers are not responsible for cash, coin and stamp collections or jewelry. We strongly suggest you find a safe place to keep your valuables before anyone from a moving company, electric company, or phone company.

25. What will be done to protect my carpets, walls and interior of my home?

Your moving crew will use recycled cardboard, masonite, and clear carpet protection to cover your entryway and heavy traffic areas.  If your surfaces need additional protection, notify your move consultant during your survey.

26. What type of quotes do you provide?

We can provide both non-binding quotes and binding quotes.  Non-binding quotes require you to pay based on the actual weight of your shipment and the services provided by your moving crew.

The most common quote used is the binding quote which is a fixed price bid that will not be exceeded unless additional services are ordered and performed that are not listed on your shipping list or inventory.  Make sure that your move consultant has included all of the items you intend on shipping.
